#DigitalThoughts with Jonas Metzler - Germany

Interview with our colleague Jonas Metzler for our new initiative, giving the stage to our team members to tell how they have been handling the challenges and rapid changes over the past months.

Read the newest edition of our #DigitalThoughts, a series of interviews, exploring how our colleagues have been dealing and adapting to the recent changes and challenges.

We are ecstatic about the team spirit that has risen over the past weeks, so we want to show the world how our colleagues from all the different offices are dealing with this peculiar time. Watch the second part of interview and find out what Jonas Metzler, a Software Developer from one of our German branches, says about the recent period.

Who are you and since when do you work in Zucchetti?

I am working as software developer in this company since August 2015. My job is both helping the support and project managers fixing issues they reported and also doing new developments or migrations.

How are you coping with this strange period personally?

I have always been a person with a positive attitude, always trying to keep my chin up even in difficult times. My mindset has not changed now, so I just try to make the best of this unpleasant situation and hope it will improve soon. Fortunately, in Germany there are still great things you can do, like cycling or walking.

What is the key moment that you remember or has left an impression on you about this whole situation?

Concerning my job: The first day that everyone worked in home office. It was very strange to do not be together in the office with all the colleagues who are usually around me. Although I am getting used to this new kind of working “bit by bit” (I must write this because we are an IT company), it is still a big difference to how it was before.

Concerning my leisure time: The first day after the lockdown in Germany had begun was very memorable for me. There was no car on the highway for a whole minute. I cannot remember this ever happening before. When walking through the forests, they were much cleaner than before because less people were hanging out there, polluting nature with bottles, plastic, or other waste.

How would you describe the corporate atmosphere and behaviour, i.e. which steps has the company taken, what has been done etc.?

I think the company has taken the right decisions, implementing the working-from-home-policy very fast without hesitating or waiting for a political decision by the government. This was very important in order to keep the number of newly infected people as low as possible. As I already wrote, it is currently a very difficult kind of working. However, I think everyone is doing the best they can, and we are still working well as team. Helping each other remote on Microsoft Teams instead of face-to-face is unfamiliar, but we are getting used to it.

How has COVID-19 affected the way you work and corporate culture?

Working from home has one big advantage: it is very quiet, so it’s easy to focus on my work without being distracted by all the noises in the office or people talking on the phone in my vicinity. But of course, I am missing the personal contact to the colleagues. Both having a chat during lunchtime and helping each other fixing issues in the source code is much easier when sitting in the same room.

Besides my colleagues at work and the atmosphere, I miss my family and friends I cannot see at the moment. Doing a video call with your best friend or your father is rather strange, when you are used to just giving them a hug.

How has your immediate team reacted?

The development team continue to have the daily “standup meeting” every morning. This way, we are making sure we stay in touch and update each other about important news.

How do you feel in the company right now? Do you feel comfortable and taken care of?

I think, as already mentioned, the early implementing of home office was the only right decision in this situation. I have the impression the company does what they can to prevent any negative consequences. I am sure the bad impacts will be kept in the lowest possible limits. Therefore, I am convinced that the situation will improve again in the next months.

Lastly, what do you miss the most? What is the first thing you are going to do when this is over?

What I am missing the most is the personal contact to my family and friends. So, the first thing I will definitely do when this strange situation is over, will be spending time with them.
